The first e-mail I got this morning

Mathieu | September 18th, 2009 | No Comments »

My Twitter settings are such that I receive notification whenever someone new follows me. How wonderful was it when I opened my e-mail this morning to find out I was being followed by “Death and taxes.”

Bugs + Streetlight + Long Exposure = very cool

Found this on the Make Magazine Web site. I buy Make in the bookstore every couple of months and dream that I would have the time or even the aptitude to tackle even 10% of the projects. Same goes for the reason why I’ve been subscribing to Canadian Home Workshop for several years and get all giddy when the Lee Valley Tools catalogues show up. The good news about this is I actually could probably replicate it! Yeah, I can use a camera and tripod!

New theme installed

Republica Screen Shot

I have been looking for a clean and professional-looking theme for Yuill.ca for a few months now. I ultimately wanted something that could feature a few blog posts and give me space to put widgets in the sidebar. I usually turn to premium themes when I get serious about WordPress installations because of the support that comes along with it so I was happy when I stumbled upon Vivathemes.

I plan on using this theme for an Intranet site at work as well and testing it out on my personal site gives me the opportunity to learn how it works before I spend hours upon hours trying to customize it at work during the day. My timeline for integrating into work has actually accelerated thanks to the amazing support I’ve received from Viva.

This theme is called Republica and it’s a classic two-column WordPress theme with very minimalist qualities. I’ve changed some of the colours from the original theme, made a few fonts bigger and so far have opted against putting the sidebar under the slideshow at the top of the page but that might change down the road.

The current menu item (today, at least) is “Not Everyone Gets A Trophy.” I plan on matching that spot to whatever is in the slideshow – so right now it will link to all the posts about that book. Next time it might be to all the funny movies I’ve posted here.

Star Wars architecture similarities

Came across a really great article in a British architecture trade magazine on their picks for the top 10 best designs.

Jawa Sandcrawler

I liked the inclusion of the Jawa Sandcrawler. While it’s technically not a building it is very cool-looking and as the author points out, it has very similar styling to both the Tunisian hotel and rem Koolhaas’ Casa de Musica in Porto.

The entire article can be viewed at their Web site.

I don’t care who you are. Even my dad who likes the Bill Gaither Trio will love this.

The best Amazon.com product reviews

A Twitter contact posted this and it honestly made my day. The reviews for this t-shirt are fantastic.

Definitely worth the click-through. Check-check-check it out. Make sure you read the reviews – that’s the funny part – even though the t-shirt is pretty funny on its own.

Ten unfortunate cakes

Funny CakeI think putting funny sayings on cakes is really funny. My first attempt was when I was a teenager. My father forgot to pick up a cake for my mom’s birthday so he sent me over to pick one up. I had the cake people put “Happy birthday mom, from Mathieu” on the cake so when my dad opened it up in the kitchen to put the candles on all you could hear was laughter.

I came across this great site that has ten really funny cake mishaps. The one above is classic. There are three words and you can’t get two of them right? The other entries are just as funny, check them out.

One Disney movie to rule them all

A brilliant mashup showing seemingly the exact same scenes from different Disney movies. Right down to the movement of the characters.
