What’s on the bookshelf

Mathieu | January 18th, 2009 | No Comments »

A few years ago, my friends Bessie and Christian gave me Delicious Library for my birthday. It’s a program that uses your iSite (or other Web cam, I guess) to catalouge all your DVDs, books, CDs and I think toys now too.

I’ve been using it ever since and I’ve recently published my shelf to the Web. It’s not the entire listing, but it has the bulk of my library. Check it out here.

Raptors + TSN2 + Rogers = sucky big time

TSN2 Logo

So TSN launched a new network aptly called TSN2 like its brethern in the United States, ESPN. And this year TSN2 will be carrying 25 Raptors games. Now about the only thing I watch on either TSN or SportsNet is baseball and Raptors and since I have yet to forgive Bell for how horribly they treated me as a student I am with Rogers.

The problem here is Rogers and TSN2 don’t have an agreement yet. It all relates around how much money Rogers would pay TSN2 per subscriber. MLSE is again, proving itself to be less than amicable to the fans. In this situation they decided to ink a deal that would see better financial returns to them than their games viewed by as many fans. Read More

Support knowledge

Mathieu | November 7th, 2008 | No Comments »

Wikipedia is a free online multi-lingual encyclopedia founded in March 2009 (it was called nupedia then and was only in English). Wikipedia is editable by anyone and in addition to contributing to exisiting entries, users can create entirely new ones.

Consider this: if you wanted to search a printed encyclopedia for information on the 2008 presidential election, you would be almost guaranteed not to find anything. An online encyclopedia, not editable by users … like encyclopedia.com would return entries like “presidential records act” and unrelated material.

However, a search on Wikipedia.org would return a page with information the campaign of both Obama and McCain, what the issues of the day was, election controversies and many other topics relating to the campaign.

Wikipedia.org is free. Access to knowledge is an extremely empowering opportunity and it’s an important cause to support.

Wikipedia founder, Jimmy Wales said it best:

Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge.”

I encourage you to donate $1, $5, $10, $30 or more to this worthwhile cause.

Tim Sanders, coming to Centennial … just not yet

Mathieu | October 15th, 2008 | 4 Comments »

Some of you knew that Tim Sanders was going to be coming to Centennial to speak tomorrow – I was very excited about this, but according to his tour coordinator, there was a mix-up about the starting time for his first speaking engagement that day. He thought it was at 9 a.m. and ours was at 1 p.m. – turns out it’s at noon (or something similar).

Life happens, though, so no worries. He will be back in town on November 10th and will return to Centennial then.

Here’s a video of Tim in action – well worth the time it takes to view.

What’s in the bathroom magazine rack?

Mathieu | September 23rd, 2008 | No Comments »

Was taking a gander at the bathroom magazine rack and found the collection kind of amusing. As you may know, I do a lot of reading in the bathroom – hey, it’s one of the only places you can get some quiet around our house – so we keep a fairly stocked magazine rack.

Magazine Rack

Anyhow, here’s an inventory of what’s currently in the magazine rack:

  • A few issues of Canadian Home Workshop
  • Last month’s issue of Fast Company (this month’s is in the living room)
  • Three issues of Harvard Business Review
  • A North American Mac World
  • That’s CAR magazine out of the UK in the front (it’s really good, this chap I know, Michael Banovsky should do photography for them)
  • That’s another UK magazine on the floor, about Macs.
  • And Wired magazine on the top
  • Oh right, and a Nintendo DS in its carrying bag

That’s right, a Nintendo DS. But it’s not mine. That’s the only thing in there (aside from the shoes, but they’re not in the magazine rack) that doesn’t belong to me. It’s loaded with Brain Age 2 – Alison plays it throughout the day and she loves it. I’m just curious if it will go with her to work when she’s done with maternity leave or if it’ll stay in the bathroom

Learning to eat ice cream cake

At my sister’s birthday today, Connor is having his first taste of ice cream cake. At first he was a bit cautious but he grew to enjoy it. That a boy!

Tackling Mount Fuji and Japanese toilets

Mathieu | July 30th, 2008 | No Comments »

My sister, Amanda, is currently living in Japan. I think she’s going to be living their for most of the rest of her life, but I digress.

Last weekend, her and a few friends climbed Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan measuring 3,776 metres high (12,388 feet for you imperialists). The climb took her more than a day, they even climbed throughout the night only stopping for rest at 5 a.m. to 9 a.m..

I asked her how the experience was and she replied “Intense.” A few of her friends experienced altitude sickness, having to stop to toss their cookies once and a while. Amanda even said there were times when she would walk for five minutes and her heart would be pounding – and Amanda runs marathons for fun.

She blogged a little bit about it over at her site, browse over there to get more of the story and see some better pics. Here’s a photo of her high up on the mountain (above the clouds!)

Amanda on Mt. Fuji

One of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time is this hand-drawn illustration explaining how to use the toilets on the rest stops along the way up the hill. You’re supposed to pay, btw, for using the bathroom on the way up and the farther up the mountain you get the more expensive it is. As a side note, workers do 40 day shifts on Mount Fuji, which makes sense since you wouldn’t want to make that commute every day.

Blogging from the bathroom

Pretty happy about the WP iPhone app that let’s you blog from the phone. I always loved testing from the bathroom and now I can take that to the next level – blogging from the can!

Connor’s 3rd birthday – the party

Mathieu | May 5th, 2008 | No Comments »

Alison put together a great third birthday party for Connor at the Peanut Club the Saturday before we left for Mrytle Beach. I took photos and got them edited and finally put up on this Web site.

You can see the gallery of Connor at 3, by following the link.

Myrtle Beach Day 4: at the Beach

Mathieu | May 4th, 2008 | No Comments »

We headed back to the beach for Saturday. We decided that Saturday and Sunday would all be about Connor and what we could do for him to have the most amount of fun. So we headed to the beach where he played in the sand, had some gold fish, walked down the beach with Alison and then I took him to the lazy river where his idea of a good time is daddy pulling him around while he sits and laughs.
