Our dog, Molly

Mathieu | April 6th, 2010 | 1 Comment »

This is our Cocker Spaniel, Molly. She’s about eight years old and is very mild mannered. She rarely barks (even when there is a knock at the door) and while she likes to play she doesn’t constantly bring you the ball. When you’re ready to play, she plays, otherwise she doesn’t bug you about it. With our third child on the way our two-bedroom bungalow has become uber crowded so we’re hoping to find someone/a family who has room for Molly.

She’s crate trained and is up-to-date with all her shots. There are more photos of her here. If you or someone you know might be interested in giving Molly a home, please let me know.

Mike and Katherine at the Raptors awesome victory

There is no mistaking a good wife sitting beside her champion of lost causes aka the 2009-2010 Detroit Pistons. I’m pretty sure K-star bought these tickets for Mike, a life-long Detroit Pistons fan. Good on her! For the record, it’s mostly Katherine’s mannerisms that helped me pick them out on the TV. Mike is pretty much robotic so it’s not as easy to spot him :-)

Stand

Stand Flyer

A friend of mine e-mailed me about a play she’ll be performing in at her church called Stand. It will be performed on Sunday November 29 at 6 p.m..

According to my friend, it contains mature themes and it would be best to get a sitter for the little ones. I asked her but no response on whether or not this means there will be nudity.

The play is happening at Global Kingdom Ministries, 1250 Markham Road in Scarborough (2 lights south of the 401, on the west side, just past the McDonalds).

If you’d like to go, contact me and I’ll help you get some tickets.

Three things you should keep for real life, not e-mail

Mathieu | October 16th, 2009 | No Comments »

Who needs a lesson in how we communicate? Probably lots of us these days. We’ve all gotten those e-mails that read horribly but the sender didn’t mean to come across so rudely. I recommend Tim Sander’s 12 rules for e-mail ettiquette as a good place to start to develop your personal e-mail policy. So while you’re waiting for that to arrive in the mail, get rid of these phrases.

1. blah blah blah, don’t you think?

In real life this phrase is useful because you’re inviting the person you’re speaking with to share their ideas and bounce some brainstorming around. Online it’s just a one-way conversation and comes across a bit smug and patronizing

2. No

No is something you say to someone’s face or at the very least over the phone. When someone asks you a question in e-mail, respond with either a yes or a request for more information. If you need to reject their request then have the common courtesy to say it in person or let them hear your voice. They’ll probably have questions like “why,” and again, in an e-mail you can’t have that conversation

3. Any wrod spelt worng

Spelling things wrong in an e-mail is akin to telling someone you don’t really care about the message you’re delivering. Honestly, how hard is spell check? Plus, doesn’t your e-mail program automatically underline spelling errors? If not, start using one that does.

Here is our main AV guy at work, Geoff, weary eyed from editing BBQ footage. He’s also tired from the constant jokes doled out all day in the office.

A ten-word biography

Mathieu | July 13th, 2009 | 4 Comments »

I came across this neat idea over at SoulPancake.com, the idea is you write a ten-word biography of yourself. I thought it would be a challenging exercise to both sum up your life thus far and then only have ten words in which to do it.

Here’s mine:

Parents kicked me out, found myself in my love, Alison

And here is the love of my life:

Alison and me, circa many years ago

This is us circa many, many years ago at a friend’s wedding.

What would your ten-word biography be?

Five concerts I’d never miss

Mathieu | June 25th, 2009 | No Comments »

I am not a huge fan of live music. I used to go to a lot of concerts in my youth often going to at least a dozen during the summer months but in my adult years a combination of other commitments and different ways to spend my free time and money mean it takes something special to get me out to a live show. But here are five shows I would never miss:

1. K-os
I’ve been a big fan of his since I first saw him at Centennial College before his first album release. We got him in for $500 or something ridiculous like that. I love his music and his simple live show. However, the live show might be not as simple anymore since he’s more famous now.

2. James
This band at one time had the most played song on the radio (around the world) with Laid. It was featured in American Pie which gave them some Stateside fame but they were already a big hit in Europe and especially in their native England. They’ve had several great albums since Laid hit it big in North America but when they do come to Toronto, they play small venues and sell-out fast.

3. SinĂ©ad O’Connor
I was in grade six or seven with Nothing Compares 2 U came out (written by Prince). It was a commercial success and topped the charts for a few weeks. I liked the entire album and picked up her previous releases and pretty much every one since. I saw her at Massey Hall in Toronto in 1996 or 97, I forget which year, and it was fantastic.

4. Michael Jackson
Just to see him dance and try to figure out what is up with this dude. But it would be a great show.

5. U2
Especially with their 360 degree stage they’ve designed. This would be a great show. Plus their huge catalogue of music to pull from – this would be an easy win.

Hillary Web art

Our friend, Hillary Webb is a fabulous textile artist. A year or so ago we bought this piece from her with the idea that it would go in our basement when finished. This weekend I put it up and snapped this photo to show here where her work has gone. We love it, Hillary is amazing and her work is very reasonably priced. Read More
